Sarawak, a state on the island of Borneo, is set to attract more international visitors with its unique culture, nature, and cuisine. The Sarawak Tourism Board is running 92 tourism initiatives in 2026 to showcase the region’s wildlife, adventure, and history.
Direct flights from Sarawak to India and Korea are in the pipeline, making it easier for tourists to visit. Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, is a charming and colourful city shaped by traders from India and China, the British Brooke dynasty, Malay communities, and indigenous groups.
Exploring Kuching
Kuching has a one-kilometre-long waterfront promenade along the Sarawak River, dotted with restaurants and historical buildings. Visitors can take traditional wooden boat rides, watch the sunset, and grab a bite to eat. The city also has food markets, Chinese temples, and heritage-inspired attractions that are busy with activity.
The Sarawak Cultural Village, which was upgraded in June 2026, is a popular attraction. Other notable attractions include the Cat Museum, the Chinese History Museum, and the Indian Mosque, also known as the floating mosque.

For many travellers, seeing orangutans is a top priority. The Semenggoh Wildlife Centre, located just a 30- to 40-minute drive from Kuching, is home to 28 semi-wild orangutans. Tourists can visit twice a day during feeding times.
Kuching is also a foodie’s paradise, with delicacies derived from the state’s 34 ethnic communities. The local cuisine is unique to Southeast Asia, with must-try dishes including ayam pansuh, umai, Sarawak layer cake, and laksa.
