The gathering, titled “From Intent to Investment”, projected that the investments would generate over 22,000 jobs across tourism-linked industries.

West Bengal’s government revealed plans for a INR 12,534 crore tourism investment drive during a major event in Kolkata on World Tourism Day 2026, aiming to expand the state’s economic base through hospitality and cultural projects. The announcements, made at an Investors’ Meet led by Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta and Tourism Minister Shankar Ghosh, covered hotel developments, tea estates, heritage restorations, and wellness retreats.

The gathering, titled “From Intent to Investment”, projected that the investments would generate over 22,000 jobs across tourism-linked industries. Major investors, including Ambuja Neotia Group, Hilton, Beekay and Sonerio Hotels, and Luxmi Tea Co., pledged to develop projects in North Bengal, where tea tourism and scenic attractions are key focuses. Additional proposals from Sree Balaji Group and Bari Kothi Heritage Hotels centered on reviving historic sites while expanding leisure and wellness tourism.

The state’s tourism department also introduced plans to deploy artificial intelligence in destination management, targeting operational efficiency and global promotion. The government’s approach centers on sustainable development and public-private partnerships, with officials noting West Bengal’s untapped potential in tourism. A new bilingual digital platform and mobile app, unveiled by Ghosh, will enable investors to submit proposals, file grievances, and interact directly with authorities. The event closed with appeals for continued investment, framing the state as an emerging destination for cultural and nature-based tourism.

The state’s emphasis on AI-enhanced destination management mirrors a national trend, where technology is being used to improve visitor experiences and marketing. Unlike earlier government-driven projects, this round prioritizes private developers, with firms like EVARA Hospitality and MLA Group leading proposals for boutique hotels and corporate lodgings. The digital platform’s introduction signals a push for greater transparency, though its effectiveness will hinge on adoption by investors and travelers.
