Cherai promotes itself as heritage gateway
Cherai is seeking to establish itself as a gateway to the Muziris heritage through a collective tourism push, positioning itself as more than just a beach destination. The Cherai Beach Hotels and Resorts Development Forum, formed in 2010, aims to promote Cherai as a destination in its own right, highlighting its unique combination of sea, lake, rivers, canals, estuaries, and paddy fields.
Collective Tourism Efforts
According to Founder President Vinoj MV, Cherai’s proximity to a rich concentration of heritage sites associated with Muziris is a major strength. The destination has developed around 30 tourism packages covering village life, fishing, food, farming, art, culture, heritage, and the local environment.
These packages encourage visitors to stay longer and ensure that tourism spending reaches local communities. Experiences include interacting with mural artists, dancers, farmers, environmentalists, fashion designers, and local families involved in traditional cooking.
Muziris Heritage Circuit
Cherai’s location gives it a strategic advantage for exploring the Muziris heritage circuit, with historical links extending from the ancient Muziris period through Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule. Attractions include the historic Portuguese-era Ayakotta Fort, the Basilica of Our Lady of Ransom at Vallarpadam, and the 500-year-old Sri Krishna temple.
The Gaurishwara temple festival features around 31 elephants and traditional rituals, while the Sri Varaha temple is associated with a unique chariot festival. Cherai Tourism is also using tourism to showcase contemporary livelihoods, such as fishing harbors, boat-building yards, and fish-processing units.

Community-Based Initiatives
The organisation’s community-based activities are designed to ensure that payments go directly to the people providing the experiences. Cherai Tourism has introduced a unique certification in net casting, where a local fisherman issues a signed certificate for those who learn net casting.
The collective has also developed initiatives around responsible tourism, including “Mother’s Promise” and “Room for Respect”, which focus on environmental responsibility and preventing misuse of tourism infrastructure. They are advocating for a Tourism Regulation and Protection Act to establish clearer safeguards and standards for the sector.
Cherai Tourism has introduced a destination-focused AI chatbot, Arya, and developed a digital character called “Veeru, the Warrior of Cherai”, an animated character intended to familiarise younger generations with the destination’s history and pride of place.
Food and Accommodation
Food is another area of experimentation, with the association pioneering “Samudra Sadya”, a Kerala-style feast centred entirely on seafood, and is developing “Saho”, a shared culinary experience inspired by social reformer Sahodaran Ayyappan and the tradition of community dining.
Cherai’s accommodation spectrum ranges from Rs 600 to Rs 60,000, with the collective commanding an inventory of approximately 600 rooms. Vinoj believes Cherai’s collective approach is ultimately about making the destination’s identity stronger rather than simply increasing visitor numbers.

With its beaches, backwaters, heritage, food, festivals, accommodation, and community experiences, Cherai is attempting to make a case for itself as more than a stopover from Kochi – a destination from which visitors can discover the many layers of the Muziris region while contributing directly to its local tourism economy.
Vinoj MV notes that the organisation is working to create a distinct identity for Cherai, one that showcases its unique cultural and natural heritage. By doing so, they aim to attract visitors who are interested in experiencing the authentic charm of the region.
The development of tourism packages and community-based initiatives has been a key focus for the organisation. They have developed a range of experiences that allow visitors to engage with local communities and learn about their customs and traditions.
Cherai Tourism’s efforts to promote responsible tourism practices are also noteworthy. They are working to establish clear guidelines and standards for the sector, which will help to ensure that tourism development is sustainable and beneficial to local communities.
